Many pharmacies in Knowsley provide a Care of the Chemist Scheme where your local Pharmacist is able to prescribe from an agreed list of medications so they can recommend the most appropriate treatment for your condition. The scheme provides an additional way for you to access medications when needed, without having to see your GP. Conditions include allergic reactions, diarrhoea, oral thrush, colds, haemorrhoids, scabies, coughs, head lice, scabies, hayfever, sore throat, constipation, headache, temperature, contact dermatitis, indigestion, threadworms, cystitis, nasal congestion, vaginal thrush, warts and verrucas.
No Additional Costs
When pharmacies provide medicines as part of a minor ailment scheme, you get the medicines on the NHS. If you normally pay a prescription charge, this charge will apply here. If you’re exempt from prescription charges – if you’re under 16 or over 60, for example, or if you have a prescription prepayment certificate (PPC) – you won’t pay for the medicine.
You can talk to your pharmacist in confidence, even about the most personal symptoms, and you don’t need to make an appointment. It is possible to walk into any community pharmacy and ask to speak with the pharmacist. Most pharmacies now have a private consultation area where you can discuss issues with pharmacy staff without being overheard. Alternatively you can arrange a consultation over the phone.
The scheme does not stop you seeing your GP in the normal way – it provides an additional path for you to access medications when needed, without having to see your GP.
